Scholar Phase Book Clubs for Teens?

We did a Love of Learner and Transition to Scholar book club a couple years ago and it was slightly successful. In the beginning, everyone is very enthusiastic. Everyone has the perfect plan to read the books, attend the book club, and share their incredibly thought provoking opinions.

Then life sets in...

...and the book club starts to become less of a priority.

This is actually normal for the Love of Learner and Transitioning Scholar (who is still in Love of Learning by the way). The sad thing is that so many parents desperately want their children to be Scholars long before they are ready to be one. It is normal, on the conveyor-belt education plan that is, to push that child to be in the club. Those on a Leadership Education plan know that when a child, typically an older teen, is ready to be a Scholar they want to read the books, they want to attend the meeting, and they want to share their incredibly thought provoking opinions.

And they want to do it every month.

Last Fall we started a combined teen and adult book club. What we found was that very few people read the books! What does that mean? It means that not too many people attending the book club are actually Scholars. They are Love of Learners who pick up books they want to read and put aside the ones they don't want to read. Should they stop going to book club? No! A Love of Learning book club is a very good thing, but it should not be confused with a more thorough, deep, and serious colloquium for Scholars.

In this incidence of a Love of Learning book club, it fits in with the weekly or monthly club mentioned in Leadership Education on pages 100-101 Ingredient #15- The Weekly Club.
