....read their original works.
Scary? Yes, it can be. What if we are swayed to their beliefs? What if our children read their scriptural works and become hazy in truth and falsehood? For me the key has been to study the works with my own scriptures by my side. Sometimes I would check the references of my own scriptures after reading certain beliefs. Also, if a person's Core is not solid, then postpone reading other religious works until it is solid with right and wrong, true and false, good and bad.
What we found is that many religions have similar beliefs. Who knew, right? With that in mind, it is helping me to see two things:
- We have much in common with other religions in which we can be happy about, sharing our mutual beliefs can help us find common ground to build relationships with our neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc.
- Satan is very good at tweaking truth. He intermixes truth with his falsehoods. This knowledge helps me to see how easily people can be led away and reinforces the need to study my own faith DAILY!
World Religion Classics:
- Understanding the Times: The Collision of Today's Competing Worldviews
- make sure you get the latest edition that includes Islam.
- Torah - Genesis
- The Bible
- Qur'an - Cows
Cross referencing between the Torah and the Bible is very interesting. My children and I found a few references in the Qur'an that are similar to Christian beliefs, yet many that are very different. We have not read all of the Qur'an, but have found certain parts of it to be useful to study so that we know where the Islamic culture is coming from.
This is not a very extensive list, for there are MANY religions on the earth today. Understanding the Times: The Collision of Today's Competing Worldviews
is important to read to understand the different forces at work when it comes to religion and how they base their decisions.
NOTE: As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have another work to add to the study of Genesis in The Pearl of Great Price.
